Workshop 2

Empathy

Workshop 2 was held on 6th July 2012 at the Tower of London. The specific focus for the day was Empathy, namely the following questions:

– Do participation and co-production in heritage aid empathetic engagement?

– How might empathy and emotional engagement be better articulated?

– Are learning outcomes the best ways to think about this?

The day started with a paper from Jenny Kidd on empathy and education, followed by a paper from Sam Cairns, and group discussion. The afternoon session involved a tour of the Tower where questions were raised about empathy, emotion, silence, space and the ethics of interpretation (or making decisions not to interpret).

Great workshop today at the Tower – I finally made sense of the difference between intellectual empathy and what passes for empathy in education. It’s quite a relief because it’s been puzzling me since 1997. Lots to think about and I’m looking forward to doing that over the weekend.
